Good Morning Sam:
I guess it is appropriate to be added to the ship's "Sick Call" list.  My name is Edmund T. ("Ted") Wegener, Jr..  I served aboard PROVIDENCE as the Legal Officer/Legal Assistance Officer from July 1971 through the decommisioning of the ship in late 1973.  Upon the decommissioning of the ship, I was released from active duty and returned to civilian life where I established a law practice first in New Orleans, Louisiana and eventually in Slidell, Louisiana.  I learned in July of last year that I have terminal cancer and retired from the practice of law just this month.   I now live at home in Slidell, Louisiana with my wife, Darlene, waiting for the final playing of "Taps."

I want to wish all my former friends and shipmates from PROVIDENCE "fair winds and following seas."  I truly enjoyed my time aboard PROVIDENCE.  I can honestly say that they were some of the best days of my life, both personally and professionally.

Ted Wegener

Shipmates,   My dad just passed away and will be buried at the Veterans Riverside Cemetary which is located in Riverside, CA.  He was veteran that served in WWII like Jack's dad.  Many men from Prov have been buried there and I plan on the same for myself and wife.   My stepdad's name is Benito A. Alvarez and served in the USN Aircorp.  He flew aboard the Liberator..B24's.  Part of his tour included picking up new planes at Consodated Aircraft in San Diego and flying them to the Texas plant for placing of armaments and then other locations for use in WWII.    My mom Lupe Alvarez was a "rosie the riviteer" at Consolidated and worked there during the war.  We took my mom over to the cemetary today and she was impressed how nice it was.    Ben not only served his country but also became an Operating Engineer and could operate almost every type of heavy equipment throughout his life. He was a great dad and provider for our family.  My dad lived a full life (88 years) and passed on to be with his Creator.  Life has been good to him and to us.   Sincerely, Sam Villa
